What is a yeast infection and what causes it? Candida is the scientific name for yeast and it’s a fungus that lives almost everywhere, including in your body. It’s a fungal organism that’s present in everyone’s intestinal tract. A normal healthy immune system keeps yeast under control by beneficial intestinal bacteria.
