I was recently given the opportunity to try out a new meatless product. I was quite excited to try this product out.
When I started looking on this shall not be named website, I saw that it stated they did not use any GMO products. Although, the products have yet to be certified and the product packaging does not indicate this.
Now, before I start picking apart this product,I want to make sure you all understand that even though a product is GMO-Free, this doesn’t give it the “green light”
Did you know what even “GMO-Free” products can contain:
Synthetic Pesticides – A standard bag of GMO-free potato chips is filled with as much as 35 different pesticides.
Roundup (Sometimes called Glyphsate) -this is a toxic herbicide linked to such things a breast cancer, birth defects, and kidney disease. In addition to this, a scientist stated that glyphsate is highly likely to be the cause for autoimmune and other neurological disorders.
Hexane Neurotoxin– This is a gasoline byproduct that is used to help extract cooking oil.
Sewage Sludge – This is exactly what you think.. Treated waste, and waste left over from hospital and industries. Besides this just being downright nasty, it is filled with chemicals, pharmaceuticals, heavy metals. This is so highly toxic that it has been shown to kill livestock.
Growth-Promoting Antibiotics-Antibiotics have been used in livestock to “fatten them up” and guess what, it is “fattening” you up too. Antibiotics kill everything, even the good stuff. Therefore when antibiotics are ingested they are removing the probiotics that help absorb the healthy nutrients into our body, leaving our bodies helpless
Ractopamie– Even Non-GMO meat products have been shown to contain steroid hormones, that had been injected into livestock.
Now that you all understand that, back to the ingredients……
I then continued to review a few of the ingredients listed. I was ever so surprised in my findings.
Vital Wheat gluten, Filtered water, organic expeller pressed palm fruit oil, barley, garlic, expeller pressed safflower oil, onions, tomato pate, celery, carrots, naturally flavored yeast extract, onion powder, mushrooms, barley malt, sea salt, spices, carrageenan(Irish moss sea vegetable extract), celery seed, balsamic vinegar, black pepper, shitake mushrooms, porcini mushroom powder, and tallow pea flour.
After reading this I had major Red Flags pop up.Lets break down some of the ingredients on this list:
Vital Wheat Gluten: This is the protein in the form of a powder. Basically, when wheat flour dough is washed with water, the starch dissolves and leaves the gluten. This acts as a binding agent and has a Meat-like texture This can also be viewed as a very high allergy promoting ingredient.
Naturally Flavored Yeast Extract: I commonly hear people as is yeast extract bad for you? This by far is the worst product of all on this list! To give you a little bit if history. I wont bore you I promise, but this will give you an understanding on why.
What is Monosodium Glutamic Acid (MSG)? Well, this is a chemical added to food. It is used as a flavor enhancer, and ultimately creates an addition to the product. No reason why people have cravings for certain foods. MSG also is used as an excitotoxin. This means that the job of MSG is to stimulate the sensory nerves.
Back in the mid 1960 the popular saying “Chinese Restaurant Syndrome” was born.
What is the most common ingredient in commercialized Chinese food? MSG. Did you know that one of the highest google searches is msg chinese food, Hmmm. It was then announced that MSG was being linked to many, many health issues including: Brain issues; including neurological, migraines, liver issues, high cholesterol, obesity and many more. So people then became aware of this and started paying attention to labels. Now, being that the FDA requires companies to specifically list out Monosodium Glutamic Acid (MSG) on their ingredients, companies became sneaky. Companies are not required to list out (MSG) as long as it is a processing agent, which is used in many of the common home food items.
What does that mean? Companies are still using MSG in our products, just under different names. Naturally Flavored Yeast Extracts is one of them. So, what are yeast extract side effects? Well, the same as MSG side effects. This is the furthest thing from being natural. A lot of people will try to argue that MSG is naturally accruing. This is just not the case, or shall I say people are being tricked to think it is natural. Remember if someone says something is natural, that doesn’t mean its “naturally healthy” it just means that it may have started out in nature.. Just like hydrochloric acid and even arsenic.
Carrageenan: Often referred to as “Irish Moss”, this is a sulfated linear polysaccharide(carbohydrate). It has no nutritional value. It is commonly used as a thickening, and gelling agent. Although approved by the FDA, such countries like the European Union has banned carrageenan from use. This non user friendly ingredient has been linked to diabetes and bowel disease. Carrageenan causes inflammation, and when the body ingests enough, the inflammation onsets serious diseases like Alzheimer’s, Heart Disease, Parkinson’s, and even Cancer.
I searched everyone of their products, in hope to be able to find at least one…. Yet, not even 1 product was ok.
Therefore, I have returned all of the products I received back to this company, along with a copy of this blog post. However,I must say this product did allow me to share with you the importance of reading your labels, and providing you with education on what some of these ingredients really are.
If this company decides to change up its ingredients, and removed such things as yeast extract I would be happy to reconsider, and re-review this product. But as for now, I will keep searching for a truly healthy meat alternative and chowing down on my fruits and veggies.
