Bread the American Diet, And A Healthy Alternative Review.
Bread has become a staple in every home, and now apart of the “American Diet”. From Bagels, sandwiches, and the good old bread and butter have been the core to everyday life. But, what is
really doing to your health. Have no fear, I bring you a solution, A much better option
A Bread Alternative
Now, there is no denying, I eat bread, my 6 year old would even say a “bread head“. I think I would cry if I completely removed all from my diet. However, my rule of thumb is to, choose smart, and pick a healthy bread, here is why.
The average store bought bread contains things like:
Wheat: Most wheat now a days are so heavily processed, and most now are sourced from GMO crops
Sugar: Added sugar is so un-necessary in any product, avoid at all cost.
Soybean oil and Corn Starch: Yet another GMO sourced product.
Dough conditioners: (Sodium stearoyl lactylate, azodicarbonamide): By eating this, you are actually eating rubber. Yup, Azodicarbonaide is used to create your sneaker, and also mats.
Calcium Propionate: this preservative is added to bread to extend shelf life. However, it can also extend your stomach ulcers, behavioral changes, and headaches.
Yellow #5, and #6: Did you know that Yellow #5, and 6 have been linked to ADHD in children.
Caramel color: Although this may sound simple enough, caramel color has actually been linked to giving off a highly toxic byproduct, and shown to increase the risk of cancer.
Cellulose Fiber: Not all fiber is created equally. Cellulose is actually created from wood.
These are just a few of the many ingredients in this commercialized product So, what’s the smart way to eat bread, or the bread alternative you ask?
When grains (even the beloved whole grain or whole wheat) are made into flour and digested, your body acts fast to metabolize these.
Eating refined grains is no better than eating bowl of sugar. Your body treats it the same way.
However, with sprouted bread. The grains are soaked and sprouted. Think back to your school days. Remember placing a bean in a paper towel and it created a little plant. Same thing. Once sprouted, the sprouts are ground up and made into bread, no flour needed for this one.
Ezekiel bread benefits are amazing including this fact. Phytic acid commonly found in grain. However it is destroyed when a grain sprouts. Phytic acid inhibits vitamins and minerals to be absorbed into the body. So, without this acid your body and easy absorb the many benefits that these sprouts have to offer.
This is why my family uses sprouted bread for all of our needs.
Warning: Do not get tricked. There are so many different types of bread. There are a lot that state they use sprouted grains, yet still add fillers. I have seen a lot of restaurants that are clamming to be using “Sprouted Bread”, yet they are leaving you high and dry when it comes to the other ingredients.
By far the best brand we have found is Food for Life- sprouted bread Ezekiel. This bread is easily found in your local grocery store in the frozen section.
The reason why they freeze it is because of shelf life. Ezekiel Bread does not have any of the dough conditioners, or preservatives (the fillers as I like to call them) that store bought bread has.
This means that the bread is real, and real food ages. So, by keeping it in the freezer it can extend the life of the bread without compromising the ingredients.
Food For Life has quite a few products. From sandwich bread, to specialty breads like Ezekiel bread cinnamon raisin, English muffins, tortillas, pitas, and even hamburger buns.
I am so happy to have found this company. I have to say it is in my eyes the healthiest store bought bread
A favorite around my house is English Muffin Pizzas
Not only are these mini pizzas fast and easy, they are also very much kid approved.
I know that for my kids, they love to make their own. Topping galore.. But with all fresh veggies, and sprouted grains this is a kid approved recipe I feel great about feeding my kids.
The Easiest, Healthiest Pizza Recipe made with Ezekiel Bread English Muffins
- Let the English muffins thaw for about 1-2 hrs depending on how frozen they are. ( we keep ours in the fridge, I feel fine leaving them in there for up to a week)
- Slice the English Muffins in half ( long ways)
- Add your favorite pizza sauce ( or make your own)
- Place fresh mozzarella on top
- Have fun and add your favorite toppings. My kids love black olive pizza, we also use mushrooms, green peppers, or even sometimes some Applegate turkey pepperoni. Yumm….
- You can either place in the oven at 350 for about 7-10 min. or until the cheese has melted. OR you can place in the toaster oven for about 5-7 min. on a toast setting.
How easy is that, pair with a nice green salad and you have a quick easy, kid approved weeknight meal.
Let me know what your think of this bread alternative, sprouted pizza.
